Today's blog post provides one of the first questions to ask when you meet the instructor.

How long has the instructor been teaching?
Don't accept the answer "I've been training for xx number of years". The important answer is how long have they been teaching.
Just because someone has a black belt or is proficient at kicking, punching, takedowns, grappling etc does not mean they are good instructors.
The important issue here is how long has the instructor been teaching and do they regularly update their teaching qualifications.
At the International Taekwon-Do Federation South East Queensland (ITF SEQ) school, instructors are selected from the senior coloured belt ranks based on their skill, personality and willingness to help others.
All instructors within ITF SEQ rose through the ranks of the organisation and are totally familiar with all levels of the curriculum being taught to the students.
All ITF SEQ instructors undertake a six month training course, which teaches them how to instruct. The course includes written exams, practical in-class assessments and ongoing monthly reviews. The purpose of the course is to ensure a consistent and professional approach to teaching.
Once the instructor is qualified, there is an ongoing monthly review of their teaching skills, accuracy in technical explanation, interaction with students and management of the class.
All ITF SEQ instructors are registered with the world Taekwon-Do governing body, the
International Taekwon-Do Federation, which is headquartered in Vienna.
The Federation provides regular updates to all instructors, such as the Technical Seminar and International Instructor Course held in Montreal and provides a common platform from which all of its member schools teach.
